Recent fieldwork at the site of Pashash in Peru’s north highlands sheds new light on the formation of Recuay polities (ca. 200-700 CE) after the time of the Chavín cult in ancient Peru. Evidence suggest important new trends in the centralisation of political power: warfare, herding, and patterns of settlement and monumental architecture. Most importantly, changes in art and ideology marked the resurgence of wealthy nobles who were less interested in feline cults than in their own social memory, as seen in their ancestralisation within their palatial homes as well as in the landscape.
